Join the Walden Wombles
Please come along and join our litter picks – get in contact and we can add you to our mailing list & WhatsApp group. You will then hear about our up-coming litter picks and any other events.
If you are a runner, then we also run plogging events with the Saffron Striders. More information here.
Adopt Your Street
We would like to encourage you to look after your own street with the help of your neighbours. It is a good way to get to know your street community, feel good helping each other while working towards the same cause. You could make it a social event!
It is very important when litter picking is to remain safe:
- Where you do it – don’t take risks, ideally pick litter with another person
- How you do it – sturdy gloves, a litter picker, high-vis jacket and a bag
- What you pick up – do not pick up dog mess, needles, glass or anything suspicious – report it instead
If you need help setting this up then do get in-touch info@waldenwombles.org.uk. We are happy to advise and help provide equipment. We recommend you read our health & safety policy.
Report Litter
Uttlesford District Council (UDC)
UDC is responsible for keeping the district clean and free of litter. They do this by regular street cleaning, emptying litter bins and more. This link is for reporting litter.
To report dog mess, graffiti, spillages, fly tipping and more then visit the street cleaning and care services.
Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC)
SWTC is responsible for market cleaning services. Please use the form on Uttlesford’s website to update them.
Essex County Council (ECC)
ECC is responsible for maintaining our roads only and not for reporting litter. If you wish to report a damaged road or pothole then please contact ECC through this form.
If You’re a Business…
Most businesses feel the need to give back to the local community, often referred to as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Your contribution will have an amazing impact because litter picking is simple, immediate and makes a visible difference to the area. Sadly littering is happening more regularly so imagine how uncared for Saffron Walden would look.
It is surprising to see the amount of litter we collect – please see our blog which shows photos of our litter picks.
What can you do?
You could organise your own litter pick, though please ensure your company insurance provides the right protection for such events off site.
Alternatively, the Walden Wombles could help you run a litter pick for a small donation to help cover oiur equipment costs. Please drop us an email.
Young People…
Primary Schools & Youth Organisations
Educating the younger generation about the social unacceptance and impact of dropping litter is crucial if we are to dramatically reduce waste of this kind.
Why not organise your own litter pick. We would be happy to give some help, advice or lend our equipment.
Listen to the Wombles podcast on BBC Sounds.
Secondary Schools, Sixth Forms & Universities
If you’re working towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award, then the Walden Wombles can support you in your voluntary activity.
We would like to understand why people drop litter and how to engage constructively to reduce litter and encourage more recycling. Some thoughts on why people drop litter are here, but we would welcome your feedback or article so drop us an email. We may publish it on our website – being a published author is a great attribute on your CV and your help is much appreciated.
